The Modernism Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic | Solving Problems of The Dwelling Size By Utilizing The Soft Matt Texture！

【The Preface】

In the case it combines the utilization of the modern design style of simplisme and Wabi-Sabi. The visual presentation in the dwelling space would neither seem overly plain nor only serve the purpose of the functionality by using this practical style under an influence of the Japanese spatial aesthetic.

The Khaki colour is the dominant tone being used in this spatial design. It brightens up the interior atmosphere and let the residents to feel a sense of warmness, softness and liberty.

The whole set of the design displays its main focus on the reasonable storage management, the well-handled dwelling structure, the aesthetic and the spontaneous development of the space itself.

【An Introduction of The Re-Construction】：

The building in this case contains its own structural peculiarity and thus has restrictions on re-constructing its inner space. We intend to satisfy the residents' needs as much as possible but to avoid any negative impact being brought to the inner space .

• 1-To satisfy the resident's need of building a reading room while having no reduce of the amount of the bedroom, we set up an interseptal structure between the living room and the kitchen. This is a relatively individualistic space and would be used as the reading room.。
• 2-We remodify the space in the main bedroom by moving the cloakroom beside the bedroom entrance from a deeper part of the room. This moving makes the living room wall appear as a more completed whole and set up a foundation to build the customized cabinet; the inner space of the main bedroom also becomes more neat and functional with  this change.
• 3-The open kitchen becomes a semi-closed space after adding the sliding door. It is an necessary safety procedure and stops the cooking smell and oil to spread at home.

【The  Entrance】

It is a slide long hallway after entering the home. A barrier-look decoration is built at the window place in order to ease the narrow and dark sense of the hallway. The hollow decoration enriches the visual experience as the light comes into the room through its hollowness, but the strength of the light is varied through the different thickness of each piece of the decoration.

A storage cabinet is placed out of the entrance door and the entrance hallway only place a role of passing and decorating. It is not widened to store the goods.

【The Living Room】

The living room is coloured by white, khaki and toasted almond while decorating with the log material. The combination of the plain natural texture and the white background colour provides the residents a calm but airy sensual experience, and the utilisation of the diverse colour in the same tone brings the multi-layer sensual experience by looking at different corners in the room. The leather couch, the soft cotton blanket and the tactile impression of the log floor bring a warm and soft quality to the living roome space.

It was difficult to set up the scattered light affect due to the top heating structure. We thus decide to do the directional punching when embedding the light trough. This is challengeable to the accuracy of the measurement of the design process and the constructing process.

The matt and the light absorbing material are the dominant materials being used designing the living room; these materials weaken the natural light and adjust the light perception of the living room. The texture of these materials shows a minimalist and comfortable impression and also brings the viewer a graceful beauty.

Due to the constructional structure of the building, the television wall is not 90 degree vertical to the ground so a customised cabinet is used to fix this inclination.

As the wall is expected to show a visual expression of the wholeness, an invisible door is used to improve approaching this affect. And a smooth transit space is constructed by the wooden barrier look decoration.

The resident chooses to use the couch which appear comparatively wide but has a cozy looking. There are many other home decorations being used to balance the coordination of different objects in the living room space.

【The Bedroom】

The bedroom is expected to display a quality of being plain but warm, and then makes the resident to feel cozy and free by being in the space. So the room would not be overly decorated but is estimated to be simple and functional by containing the goods such as the soft sofa-bed, the simple-looking vanity table and a hallstand in the thin shape.

There was a cloakroom in the main bedroom, the storage management thus was not sufficient for the storage need, and as we move the cloakroom from the deeper part of the room to the location beside the entrance the storage space would be enlarged and be more helpful comparing to how it was before.

Due to the living habit of the residents, we leave a hollow space to place the television in the customrised cabinet. Then the residents would be able to enjoy the TV shows in the Livingroom.

The colour being used to build the living room is continuously used in the main bedroom, which maintains the calm and cozy atmosphere being sensed in the living room.

【Lavatory】

The bathtub is added as a part of the lavatory; even though the lavatory has a limited amount of the space but still allows to enjoy the comfort during the daily lives.

【The Hallway】

The television wall extends to the hallway and leads to a transition space. The linear-shaped lights bring a multi-layer affect being received by the light perception.

【Kitchen】

The living room, the dine room and the kitchen are connected through a commonly shared space; this unified space are separated into two due to the fact that we constructed the reading room among the kitchen-dine room and the living room.

After considering the cooking habit of the Chinese cuisine, we separate the dine room and the kitchen by using a sliding glass door. This betterly fits the Chinese-style cooking method as it reduces the risk that the smoke and the oil spread during cooking, and the transparent glass sliding door decreases the feeling that the kitchen space is overly narrow and is isolated from other parts of the home space.

【Dine Room】

The dine room is an independent space but its independent is not accessed through walls but through the spatial structure.

It uses the island dine table as on one hand, it expands the storage space while adding the dining table and on another hand, the oven is moved out from the kitchen so it would be easier for residents to do the bakery as a part of the daily activity.

The window blind and the FLOS style glass ceiling lamp create an image which shows the crystal like reflections on the shadowy walls in the room which appears a warm and cozy atmosphere.

【Reading Room】

The residents requires an independent working space at home. However, after considering that the two guest bedrooms are left to the elders and the child, we construct an independent working and entertaining space between the living room and the kitchen.

In order to widen the embody experience by working in the space, the reading room is not designed as a fully closed space and the husband could see and interact with his wife as he works in the reading room while they stay home together. This makes the family members to be closer to each other. And when the storage combine is  replaced by the clapboard, it decreases the unnecessary thickness which the wall takes.

【The Guest Loo】

The dominant focus on designing the guest loo is the functionality -- it is designed as the wet and the dry area are separated and is functional enough for the daily usge.
